How to Change Fonts on Discord

Change your display name style, format messages, try Nitro fonts, and adjust text size — with desktop and mobile steps.

Want a different-looking Discord name or message? You can paste styled text into your display name, use formatting in chat, or choose Discord’s built-in display-name styles with Nitro. Start with the copy-and-paste method below.

Username, display name, and nickname

Discord uses three different name fields. Fancy Unicode styles belong in a display name or server nickname — not in your unique username.

How Discord’s three name types differ
Name Where it applies Rules
Username Global — your @handle everywhere Lowercase a–z, numbers, underscores, and periods; unique; 2–32 characters
Display name Global — shown above your username Any case, spaces, emoji, and Unicode styles
Nickname One server only — different per server Any case, spaces, emoji, and Unicode styles (needs Change Nickname permission)

For Discord’s official wording, see usernames and display names and server nicknames.

Change your name style in three steps

  1. Open the Discord font generator and enter your name.
  2. Choose a readable style and copy it.
  3. Paste it into your Discord Display Name field and save.

Open Discord Font Generator

StyleSnap creates Unicode text: special characters you can copy and paste. It does not install a font or change Discord’s app-wide typeface.

How to change your Discord display name font

Start by typing your name into StyleSnap and copying a style you like. If you are testing for the first time, choose a short name with simple lettering.

On desktop or in your browser

  1. Click the settings cog near your profile at the bottom left.
  2. Open Profiles and find the Display Name field.
  3. Replace the existing name with your copied text.
  4. Save your changes and check your profile.

On iPhone or Android

  1. Open Discord and tap your profile avatar in the bottom-right You area.
  2. Tap Edit Profile and find Display Name.
  3. Press and hold inside the field, then paste your copied name.
  4. Save your changes.
Paste into Display Name

Decorative letters belong in Display Name, not Username. See the name types table above if you are unsure which field to edit.

Try a simple style

Sample name: Nova

Sans bold 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗮
Script 𝒩𝑜𝓋𝒶
Monospace 𝙽𝚘𝚟𝚊

These are copyable characters. Their appearance can vary between devices.

How to change your font in one server

Use a server nickname if you want the styled name in just one community.

  1. On desktop, right-click your name in the server’s member list.
  2. Choose Edit Per-server Profile.
  3. Paste your styled text into the nickname field and save.

You need the server’s Change Nickname permission. If the option is unavailable, ask a moderator for help. A server nickname can override your display name in that server.

How to make Discord messages bold, italic, or monospace

For ordinary chat formatting, type the symbols below around your words. Discord turns them into formatting when the message is sent. You do not need a generator for these effects.

Discord message formatting you can type yourself
Style What to type Result Copy
Bold **Hello** Hello
Italic *Hello* Hello
Underline __Hello__ Hello
Monospace `Hello` Hello

For decorative letters, generate a short phrase in StyleSnap and paste it into your message instead. Keep longer explanations and server rules in ordinary text so they are easy to read.

How to use Discord’s built-in display-name fonts

Discord also offers Display Name Styles through Nitro. This changes how your name is rendered inside Discord, while StyleSnap changes the characters you paste.

On desktop, select your name at the bottom left, open Edit Profile, and use the + control under Display Name Style. Choose a font and apply or save your selection.

On mobile, go to You → Edit Profile → Display Name Style, choose Font, and tap Apply.

You can preview these styles without Nitro, but saving them requires Nitro.

How to change Discord’s text size

If messages are too small to read, adjust Discord’s display settings.

On desktop, open User Settings → Appearance and adjust Chat Font Scaling. Zoom Level changes the size of the wider interface; in a browser, use the browser’s zoom controls.

On mobile, open your profile, then Settings → Appearance, and look for the available text-size controls. Options and labels can vary by app version.

These settings affect your view. They do not make the messages you send larger for other people.

Why isn’t my Discord font working?

Problem Fix
Discord rejects the name. Check that you are editing Display Name rather than Username. Shorten the text or remove extra symbols if it still will not save.
My old name still appears in a server. Check your server nickname. It may be taking priority over your updated display name.
Some letters appear as empty boxes or look different. Try a simpler style. Character support and rendering vary across devices and fonts.
The copied text is hard to read. Use fewer decorative characters or switch back to ordinary letters. Some styles can also be difficult for screen readers to interpret.

Quick questions

Do I need Nitro to paste a styled name?

No. Copying Unicode characters into your display name is separate from Nitro’s built-in Display Name Styles.

Can I use the same text in my Discord bio?

Yes. Open Edit Profile, paste a short styled phrase into About Me, and save. Preview the result and keep the main information easy to read.

How do I change back to normal text?

Replace the pasted characters with ordinary letters and save. To remove a built-in name font, select Discord’s default font in Display Name Style.
